Influences on Use of Hand Cream for Nurses

The hands of medical professionals are exposed to a lot of chemicals – especially when working in hospital operating rooms. Before each operation – up to ten times a day – these doctors and nurses spend five minutes rubbing their hands with soap and abrasive sponges. Therefore, the use of hand cream is exceptionally essential to them.

The necessity of using hand cream

Hands are often exposed to bacteria, chemicals, but sometimes we take it lightly. Typically, people pay attention to their face and body but forget to take care of their hands. The hand-skin gradually becomes rough, dry, cracked, severely short of water especially in the winter.

Especially the nurses! Workplace exposure to many bacteria, chemicals, and hygiene requirements are why they should take care of their hand meticulously. If they don’t do that, the skin of their hands will be severely damaged.

Research indicates that an ICU nurse must wash his or her hands 200 times a shift to follow appropriate infection control practices. This means they have to wash before touching a patient and washing after touching a patient. Appropriate methods require a nurse to use an alcohol scrub for about 1 minute at each wash. In fact, after washing, hands become dry and cracked. These conditions can become so severe that bleeding can occur daily.

Analysis of the effect of using hand cream

A research named “Influences on use of hand moisturisers in nurses” was conducted to establish what beliefs about hand dermatitis and hand moisturizer use are associated with hand moisturiser used by nurses at home and work. The researchers used the questionnaire to get information.

The result is: “The response rate was 55/65 (85%). 42 Forty-two (76%) participants agreed that applying hand moisturizers reduced the risk of dermatitis, and 53 (96%) agreed that dermatitis increased the risk of skin carrying pathogenic organisms. Frequent moisturizer application was associated with beliefs that it was part of the nurse’s role to apply hand creams, a belief that they had had training in the use of moisturizers and believing that patients approved of them moisturizing their hands.”

Their conclusion is: “Hand moisturizer use by nurses can be improved by enhancing their beliefs that it is part of their professional role to apply hand cream regularly.”

The hand cream should be something that can be used for medical professionals as well as the patients.

The ingredients you should choose when buying hand cream, especially the nurses

Hand Cream for Nurses – Tips for Apply Moisturizers

If you are a nurse, you probably have suffered red, dry, cracked, itchy, irritated hands since you have to wash and re-wash your hands a lot of times a day. And the problem becomes more serious when the weather becomes cold and windy. So what can you do to solve this problem? Let’s use hand creams.

Why should nurse use hand cream often?

The fact is that you can avoid hand hygiene, as it has been long known that it is the very best way to prevent the spread of germs in any setting. However you can moisturize often to make your hands softer. Moisturizers can help aid in skin hydration since they usually contain water-soluble amino acids. Additionally, using moisturizers doesn’t take a lot of time so you can do that whenever you have time at any place.

Some of the most well-known hand lotions

1. AHAVA Mineral

This hand cream does not only protects your hands but also makes them softer and smoother. The main ingredient of this hand cream is hazel extract which revitalizes your hands by healing any dry, cracked skin and removes any unsightly sunspots and blemishes. You can use it as often as you need since it absorbs quickly into your skin without leaving your hands greasy. Despite its long-lasting effects on the hands, it still has some cons such as the high price or the strong fragrance.

2. Neutrogena Hand Cream

This is one of the most trusted hand creams on the market. Similar to AHAVA Mineral, this hand cream makes your hands softer and smoother just after one application. Although its price is reasonable, this hand cream is suitable for those who want to prevent cracked hands than those who want to cure their cracked hands.

3. Cetaphil Intensive Moisturizing Cream with Shea Butter

This another famous hand cream which can keep your hands nourished and hydrated all day without being greasy. However, you have to be more careful when using it since it contains parabens.

Tips for Applying Moisturizer

Now you know about the benefits of using hand cream as well as some popular hand creams. And to take the best advantages from those creams, you have to know the right ways to use them. So here are some tips that you can follow to apply moisturizer more effectively.

Pick the right product based on your skin

Our skin conditions are very different from each other, that’s why we should choose the products based on our skin condition. For example, if you have dry hands, you should apply hand cream that softly moisturizes dry hands. Or if your hands show any signs of ageing process, you should choose the hand cream that helps you reduce those wrinkles.

Pick the right product based on the seasons of where you are living

It seems like a strange tip right? Why should you care about the seasons to choose a hand cream? Well, you may not hear before but the seasons affect a lot to the effectiveness of the hand cream. Let me explain clearly, if you live in the cold places like Alaska, you need to you moisturizer that helps you against freezing cold. This moisturizer will also help dehydrate and make your skin softer. Meanwhile, if you live in tropical country like Vietnam, you will need hand cream with SPF > 15 to against sunburn.

Know the ingredients

You will hear a lot about the outstanding benefits of moisturizers on the advertisements but the truth is not all of the ingredients suits your skin. Some of them can cause allergy so you need to be more careful when choosing moisturizers. For instance, on the recent market, there are two different main ingredients in most moisturizers: emollients and humectants. While emollients act as lubricants that make the skin smooth and soft, humectants help skin retain moisture and also attract moisture from the environment. These are just two basic ingredients, and you should find out more to find the best moisturizers for your skin.

Nature or Nurture – Understanding What Causes Signs of Aging & How To Treat Fine Lines, Wrinkles & More

Is it nature or nurture that determines how your skin will age? If you’re wondering whether genetics or preventative measures (or a lack thereof!) are more important when it comes to achieving youthful, radiant skin, you’re not alone.

New Beauty Magazine recently shed some light on this matter in its’ Summer 2014 issue. “30% of skin aging is genetic,” the beauty magazine revealed, “and 70% you can control!”

Many women and men mistakenly believe that if their parents and grandparents suffered from excess, sagging skin, deep furrows and fine lines and wrinkles, there is simply nothing they can do to prevent this. False!

The effects of consistently using physician-grade skincare products and sunscreen cannot be overestimated. As over 90% of facial aging is caused by sun exposure, finding a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects from UVA and UVB rays is major. In addition, establishing an effective nighttime skincare regimen is extremely important. Incorporating products with retinol and antioxidants is essential. To learn more about sun safety and product recommendations, see Dr. Lisa Donofrio’s recent tips in Family Circle Magazine.

Did you know that BOTOX® in NYC also has preventative anti-aging advantages? It’s true. The #1 cosmetic non-surgical medical aesthetic enhancement treatment in the United States can do more than reduce the appearance of existing frown lines on the forehead and crow’s feet – it can actually prevent and delay them from forming. “I recommend Botox sooner rather than later,” says board-certified dermatologist and Manhattan cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Lisa Donofrio. “Undergoing Botox as early as the mid-to-late twenties can help prevent and delay these cosmetic concerns.”

Another popular option for outsmarting Mother Nature is customized chemical peels in New York City. By shedding dead skin cells and stimulating the production of newer, healthier skin cells, the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and more all reduced, leaving you with a noticeably more refreshed and rejuvenated complexion.

Laying Chemical Peel Myths To Rest – Finally! Chemical Peels in Manhattan, NY

A recent article in Skin Inc. Magazine stated the following, “Although chemical peels are an obvious choice to reveal younger, smoother, brighter skin, there are outdated beliefs about how peels have to perform.”

Here at The Savin Center in New York City, we frequently see patients who have numerous outdated or untrue beliefs about chemical peels. Well, we’re here to lay these myths to rest, once and for all!

Results Take Weeks or Months

Absolutely untrue! Many chemical peels offer dramatic results after just one treatment. A moderate-to-strong chemical peel can offer significant improvement for signs of aging and other imperfections in just 1 week.

Extensive Downtime

Unlike chemical peels of decades past, today’s chemical peels are completely customizable – and this means in terms of downtime, too. A mild chemical peel before a big event like a wedding or holiday party can pose little to no downtime.

No Pain, No Gain

What may be true on the sports field isn’t true when it comes to the skin. Chemical peels in New York City pose little to no discomfort. Keeping face moisturized and hydrated makes the peeling process largely painless.

One Size Fits All

No, no, no! Everyone has a unique complexion and this means a unique and customized chemical peel. NYC chemical peels come in various strengths and active ingredients to offer the best results for each client.

Home & DIY Ingredients

While Pinterest beauty treatments can be fun, the ingredients in our chemical peels are more effective than anything you’ll be able to do at home. That is because they are physician-grade, meaning the ingredients are more active and of a higher quality.
